Gr 4-6--Similar in format, length, and subject matter, these titles earn mixed reviews. Each one takes on a broad issue and focuses it by highlighting a specific case (a real murder investigation in the first, the theft of some paintings from a Norwegian art gallery in the second). These cases serve as the narrative for each book: there's a segment of the "story" on each page, accompanied by a variety of interesting "facts" highlighted in boxed areas, diagrams, and full-color photographs. These snippets include intriguing information, such as how you can tell which gun fired which bullet, and how the Internet started. This format is a bit confusing and many of the pages too busy. However, fans of the "Waldo" books may find this approach appealing. The codes and questions at the back of each volume allow readers to use their own detective powers. Overall, two titles that will attract kids who are fascinated by crime.
