Each of the articles begins with a brief description of the topic and contains numerous photographs and illustrations along with captions. Generally, the articles range in length from one to four pages and offer a brief overview of their topics. The coverage encompasses agriculture and food, engineering and construction, information technologies, medicine, and transportation. The text is clear and easy-to-read and offers pronunciation guides for hard-to-pronounce words. The layout includes many different feature boxes, among them "Look Closer," offering an in-depth discussion about a topic covered in the main text, and "Highlights," summarizing key information from the article. All of the articles conclude with a set of cross-references referred to as "Check These Out."
The colorful and eye-catching presentation, featuring many color photographs and diagrams as well as the boxed features, will especially appeal to casual browsers. In addition, the articles contain enough information to meet the needs of most upper-elementary and middle-school students. This set fills a need, as there is little on the topic for middle readers, and would be a useful addition to school and public libraries. RBB
