From Booklist:
This latest entry in a series that also includes Exploring Life Science (2000) and Exploring Earth and Space Science (2001) serves students in grades five through eight. The set offers 280 articles pertaining to all facets of technology from Abrasive to Wood and wood carving. The history of invention and innovation are also included in the coverage. Volumes 1 through 10 consist of alphabetically arranged articles, and each volume includes its own glossary and index. Unfortunately, terms that appear in the glossary are not indicated within the text of the articles, detracting from its usefulness for students. Volume 1 also includes a comprehensive table of contents and a useful listing of contents that organizes the articles by six main areas of interest. The final volume consists of a comprehensive glossary and index as well as an assortment of lists and concepts including weights and measures, "The Atomic World," the periodic table, time lines of science and inventions, famous inventors, "Places to Go," and "Things to Do."

Each of the articles begins with a brief description of the topic and contains numerous photographs and illustrations along with captions. Generally, the articles range in length from one to four pages and offer a brief overview of their topics. The coverage encompasses agriculture and food, engineering and construction, information technologies, medicine, and transportation. The text is clear and easy-to-read and offers pronunciation guides for hard-to-pronounce words. The layout includes many different feature boxes, among them "Look Closer," offering an in-depth discussion about a topic covered in the main text, and "Highlights," summarizing key information from the article. All of the articles conclude with a set of cross-references referred to as "Check These Out."

The colorful and eye-catching presentation, featuring many color photographs and diagrams as well as the boxed features, will especially appeal to casual browsers. In addition, the articles contain enough information to meet the needs of most upper-elementary and middle-school students. This set fills a need, as there is little on the topic for middle readers, and would be a useful addition to school and public libraries. RBB

From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9-Following the models of Exploring Life Science (1999) and Exploring Earth and Space Science (2001, both Marshall Cavendish), this wide-angle encyclopedia sandwiches 280 relatively dense, alphabetically arranged articles on topics in technology, agriculture, and medicine between both alphabetic and subject tables of contents in volume one, and a final volume containing an array of thumbnail biographies, time lines, addresses, and indexes. Ranging from one to five pages each, the articles take on subjects narrow ("Cog Railroad," "Lightning") and wide ("Space Travel," "Computer"), supplying for each a systematic treatment enhanced by side boxes, "Check These Out!," see references, small but sharp color photos, and labeled diagrams. Though some of the back matter looks thin-the set's lists of further reading and Web sites contain just 17 entries each, for instance-and information in such active areas as "Telephony" and "Digital Technology" is likely to date quickly, for its scope and ease of access this set makes a good basic source for reports, in conjunction with subscription databases or other online resources.-John Peters, New York Public Library
