Grade 3-4-- Short sentences, large, well-spaced text, and a blend of black-and-white photographs and sketches serve as accessible introductions to the highlights in the lives of these African-Americans. Each book tells of their early childhood, adversity, and adult achievements. However, the brevity of the coverage leaves out much of the detail and excitement in their lives and allows for little amplification or emotion. Owens's victories in the 1936 Olympics naturally dominate the coverage of his adult life, but many of Hughes's accomplishments and travels from the 1930s until his death are quickly glossed over and his political involvement is covered not at all. Paige may introduce readers to the segregation of baseball that hampered the player's career, while Truth will give an overview of that great woman's achievements. While several biographies of her are available, including Ferris's Walking the Road to Freedom (Carolrhoda, 1988), most are for older readers.
