Gr 7 Up--With their textbook format, these series titles will be most useful to students doing research on a specific type or category of drug. The text and black-and-white photos are straightforward but not compelling. Though the authors make the effort to provide a full picture of these drugs within our culture and their effects on individuals who abuse them, their lecturing tone works against them. While the information in both books is accurate as far as it goes, Tranquilizers makes no mention of the association of drug use to HIV/AIDS either in terms of risk through injection or as a result of impaired decision making due to the effects of the drugs themselves. Quaaludes may be of less interest since the drug is no longer widely used. While both of these titles make serviceable additions for reports, Susan Cohen's What You Can Believe About Drugs (M. Evans, 1987; o.p.) or Margaret O. Hyde's Know About Drugs (Walker, 1990) hold more appeal for general readers.
