YA-On January 5th it began-the Ice Storm of 1998-leaving hundreds of cities, towns, and villages without power and millions of people without heat or light for days and weeks. Abley has compiled over 200 mostly full-color photographs by 54 photographers from 9 newspapers. These pictures capture the beauty-a surreal landscape of encased forests and glistening rooftops and spires-and devastation-crushed and amputated trees and buckled hydro towers-of the storm. They also show the frailty and heroism of people in the wake of its wreckage. Abley's accompanying text focuses on the event and is full of facts, much like a news report. It lets the spectacular pictures speak for themselves.-Theo Heras, Toronto Public Library
