Gr. 4-8. With lots of thrilling action photos and lively texts, books in the new Extreme Sports: No Limits! series celebrate today's daring, sometime dangerous sports. Extreme Sports gives an overview of the exciting activities on land, in water, on mountainsides, and in midair--from kayaking and cliff diving to motocross and skateboarding. Extreme Climbing focuses on various climbing styles, including traditional rock climbing, bouldering (climbing without ropes or harnesses), and ice climbing, working in details about technique, equipment, locations, rating systems, and competitions, as well as brief profiles of individual champions. With such exciting facts, there's no need for the constant exclamatory punctuation, and the occasional computer-enhanced images distract from the realistic, breathtaking photos of athletes in action. The glossary is useful, but words in bold type are intrusive. Both books include strong safety warnings about the dangers of the sports and lots of excellent safety information, even as they encourage readers to get started. Fans, as well as budding athletes, will enjoy these. Hazel Rochman
