Grade 9 Up—The 1925 Scopes trial that tested a Tennessee state law forbidding the teaching of evolution is presented in eight chapters which describe events leading up to the trial, the trial itself, the verdict, and its legacy of the "Monkey Trial." The second section is composed of nine biographies, each of which is followed by a brief bibliography. They include chief prosecutor William Jennings Bryan; chief defense attorney Clarence Darrow; their assistants; John R. Raulston, the presiding judge; the defendant John T. Scopes; journalist H. L. Mencken, who wrote scathing dispatches from the trial; and Charles Darwin, whose book was at the root of the debate and trial. The final section of this volume is 18 primary sources, such as Darwin's thesis, court-room transcripts, newspaper articles, Scopes's reminiscences of the trial, and sources concerning "Intelligent Design" (five articles). These final articles offer arguments by proponents and opponents of the controversial, emotional, and current issue and its place in the debate over evolution.
