The first part covers Rowan's days in China in the 1940s as a reporter for Life magazine, when the Communists drove Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists off the mainland. Rowan went on to cover other areas of the Far East as well as Yugoslavia and Germany during the Cold War. In all these situations, he met and interviewed the people who had the power to make things happen. Home in the United States, Rowan, writing also for Time and Fortune, talked with soon-to-be President Gerald Ford, union leader Jimmy Hoffa, Imelda Marcos, and Ross Perot, among others. Rowan must have kept a very complete journal or have total recall, because he is able to recount details of meetings and conversations held years ago.
