From Publishers Weekly:
Rowan, a former correspondent for Time, Life and Fortune, has raided his notebooks to produce a scrapbook of portraits, heavily weighted to his interesting experience in a changing China. As a young reporter wandering about China in 1947, he wangled his way into Life with his accounts of the rise of the Communists. He went on to report from elsewhere, including India, where he portrayed the Nizam of Hyderabad, the wealthiest man in the world in 1948, and East Germany, whose Communist leader, Walter Ulbricht, withstood the protests of his people in 1953. In the U.S., Rowan covered the Little Rock desegregation crisis, negotiated to acquire the notorious Zapruder film of JFK's assassination for Life and followed new President Gerald Ford on his maiden forays into diplomacy. He pads the book with pieces on the likes of Imelda Marcos, Frank Lorenzo and silver magnates Nelson Bunker Hunt and his brother William. Illustrations not seen by PW.

From Library Journal:
This lively memoir reads like a novel. The first part covers Rowan's days in China in the 1940s as a reporter for Life magazine, when the Communists drove Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists off the mainland. Rowan went on to cover other areas of the Far East as well as Yugoslavia and Germany during the Cold War. In all these situations, he met and interviewed the people who had the power to make things happen. Home in the United States, Rowan, writing also for Time and Fortune, talked with soon-to-be President Gerald Ford, union leader Jimmy Hoffa, Imelda Marcos, and Ross Perot, among others. Rowan must have kept a very complete journal or have total recall, because he is able to recount details of meetings and conversations held years ago. He ends with a short essay on his conclusions about the qualities that make people powerful. A suitable purchase for public libraries.?Rebecca Wondriska, Trinity Coll. Lib., Hartford, Ct.
