Ages 2-6. This is one of those books where atmosphere overrides message. The message pads in quietly at book's end, like a satisfying "ahhhh" after seeing a fireworks display. The magic comes mostly in the paintings; Wilson-Max uses intense gouache, with simple, lumpy drawings, and brushstrokes that look like children's finger painting. Somehow, these childlike paintings convey the wonder of looking at the night sky. The story centers on a little boy who lives with an elephant, Big Blue, and a pig, Little Pink. They leave their dinner of green jelly to go outside and wish upon a star. Big Blue wishes not to be afraid of the dark. To the pig's teasing, Max responds that everyone is afraid of something, and goes about hanging stars from the ceiling upstairs so that the elephant can view the sky while safe inside. A cozy book about friendship and problem solving. Connie Fletcher
