Tragedy, separation, adventure, action, love and war are all elements of this '30s and '40s novel about two brothers faced with the prospect of growing up alone. Set in the hill country of Southeast Ohio it moves to the west coast, Hawaii, then to the battlefields of Europe where futures are measured in milliseconds.

From the Publisher:
. he (author) only wanted to add his novel to the wholesome reading booklist. Knapp succeeds in meeting his goals-the novel is an engaging read for young and old alike.
From the Author:
My roots are in the rural Midwest, and my life spans much of the period I write about. During the Great Depression of the '30s, many instances of financial hardship resulted in families being split apart with children sent to live with relatives or friends who might be slightly better off. Meant only to be a temporary arrangement, there were times it became permanent. When families moved to find work, there were even instances when the children lost contact with their parents and siblings. I wanted to capture the trauma these "children of necessity" felt as they left their homes not knowing if they would ever return or be reunited as a family again!
