Grade 5-8-The CHAMPS program stresses that young people need to believe in themselves, relax, set goals, be organized, and take care of their bodies before learning can be maximized. Then they can begin to take in information and make those facts easier to remember through active questioning, using their senses, and improving their reading and listening skills. Using one or more of the "8 intelligences," students are shown how to think about subjects and understand better what they are learning. Bright, full-color photos of contemporary young people and cartoon drawings help emphasize key points. Generally, the book is well designed; the exception is the Learning Map at the end of each chapter, which is very busy and hard to read. A one-page "commercial" for the CHAMPS online program precedes the index. There's some good stuff here. The language is conversational and age-appropriate, and the visuals will appeal to the intended audience. The question is, will kids pick this book up? Librarians can introduce it, but it will most probably be used by caring teachers and parents. Some activities could be done in a classroom setting and individuals may be more motivated to check out the book after doing some of them there. Elizabeth James and Carol Barkin's How to Be School Smart (Lothrop, 1998) covers some of the same material but has no visuals.
