About the Author:

Stanley L. Engerman is John H. Munro Professor of Economics and Professor of History at the University of Rochester, where he has taught since 1963. He is coauthor, with Robert William Fogel, of Time on the Cross, winner of the Bancroft Prize in 1974. He is also coauthor, with Lance E. Davis, of Naval Blockades in Peace and War: An Economic History since 1750 and has written or co-dited numerous works on slavery and American and British history. He has been a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and Pitt Professor at the University of Cambridge. Most recently, he was a fellow at the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University.

Engerman coauthored the controversial Time on the Cross (1974), critiquing slavery from a purely economic perspective. He returns to the general subject matter from a worldwide comparative viewpoint, challenging the notion of the American South's "peculiar institution." However, he acknowledges unique social and cultural differences in America: the high ratio of slaves to freedmen in the Caribbean, higher degrees of American-born slaves in contrast to imports, their higher fertility rate compared to that of whites. These factors and others had significant implications for American slave culture. He surveys current scholarship and discusses questions central to understanding slavery, including free labor versus slave labor and manumission versus legislation to provide broader freedom. Engerman also discusses the value of property and how the issue of compensating slaveholders throughout the world was addressed.
