PreSchool-Grade 2When Raffertys mom refuses to put aside her painting to play with him, the young fox decides to run away from home to find a new mother. Life with the Porcupine family is fun until he discovers that Mrs. Porcupine doesnt cut sandwiches into stars, clouds, suns, and moons the way his mother does. Hes also disappointed to find out that Mrs. Beaver doesnt read stories at rest time and that theres no room in a tub full of raccoon children for the toys and games that made his bath time so enjoyable. So he returns home, where he discovers that his mother has planned an afternoon of paw painting and moon sandwiches. While this is not a new theme in picture books, Raffertys quest for a mother more to his liking will resonate with young readers who are sometimes denied playtime with their parents. The repetitive plot will enable them to predict what will happen to the young fox as he tries living with each new family. The large cartoon illustrations offer stylized scenes of the forest.
