The purpose of this book is to provide the undergraduate and graduate student and scholar, in a handy and convenient form, a comprehensive but not exhaustive survey of the critical literature on the most important writers of the 18th century. Other bibliographies exist - "The Year's Work in English Studies", the "MLA International Bibliography", the "MHRA Annual Bibliography", and especially the annual issues of "Philological Quarterly" and its successors, sponsored by the American Society for 18th Century studies, which have been devoted exclusively literature written between 1660 and 1800's - but in every case they either on annotated or the listings are scattered throughout so many volumes as to make the search for items on a particular work both tedious and frustrating. If, for example, one wanted to determine what significant work has been done on "The Rape of the Lock", one would be compelled to examine between 50 and 60 volumes of several of the bibliographical series - a labor that the present volume is intended to alleviate. Obviously, given the enormous amount of critical and historical scholarship on 18th century that has been produced during the past half-century, it would be impossible for one volume to include all significant books and articles on all writers and subjects of interest to scholars of the period. Thus a person desiring to know all the available scholarship on a specific subject would inevitably have to examine, not one bibliographical tool but several, for no bibliography can garner successfully every relevant item pertaining to a particular topic. It's the present bibliography, therefore aims at a more modest and achievable goal than that of a completeness. Instead, it aims at providing the students and scholars with a volume that may possibly serve all of his needs - very rarely does one require every bit of information on the subject - and only occasionally will prove insufficient to the point that it will be essential...
