About the Author:
Martha S. Putney (PhD, University of Pennsylvania), retired history professor, is the author of "Black Sailors: Afro-American Merchant Seamen and Whalemen Prior to the Civil War" and numerous articles on blacks in American history and society. She served as a commissioned officer in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps/ Women's Army Corps from 1943 to 1946.
