This textbook examines, from the perspective of the historic events of 1989-1991, the transition of Europe from a period of crisis to an era of political confidence and economic strength. The chapters are organized to present international and domestic developments in Europe as coherent wholes. The initial analysis of key international developments in the 20th century helps readers to understand the relationship between foreign and domestic events and provides background for the discussion of the major European countries and their rebirth.

From Library Journal:
Five eminent historians (Black, Jonathan E. Helmreich, Paul C. Helmreich, Charles P. Issawai, and A. James McAdams) have pooled their expertise to produce a timely and sound textbook of European history since 1945. The first half traces European international relations, in particular the formation of East and West blocs and the influence of the Cold War on Europe's recovery from the devastation of World War II. The second offers individual chapters on each European nation or region, emphasizing political and economic developments and paying less attention to social and cultural affairs. Coverage ranges from 35 pages for France to three pages for Switzerland. Throughout, the contributors take a descriptive rather than an interpretive approach. Designed for college undergraduates and interested general readers, this historical review comes at a most convenient time, incorporating the great sea changes of 1989 and 1990 in Eastern Europe and thus providing a fresh perspective on the entire postwar era.
