Although an accomplished novelist, essayist, and biographer, Lady Ritchie (1837-1919) was and continues to be overshadowed by her famous father, William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-63). After their mother went insane, Anny and her sister, Minnie, grew up haphazardly, shuffled between their father and grandmother. As a young woman, Anny became especially close to her father, acting as a surrogate wife. She was devastated by his death, but it was after this that her own creativity fully emerged. Like her father, she was an astute observer and chronicler of human nature. In addition to a good portion of letters written over the course of her lifetime, this volume contains Anny's complete journal entries. She vividly depicts the vagaries of Victorian life and poignantly reflects on her own grief after her father's death.
