Over the past few years, the Hubble Space Telescope has provided us with images of astonishing clarity and detail, images that have revolutionized how scientists and incidental stargazers alike perceive our universe. Other space probes, such as Galileo and the recent Mars Surveyor, have similarly dazzled the world with photographic detail once unimaginable.

Empire of the Sun features a gallery of some of the most breathtaking space imagery ever assembled between two covers. Focusing on our solar system, the book offers dozens of dramatic, full page, full color images of crater farms on Venus, the spectacular rings of Saturn, Jupiter and its many moons, the swirling tail of the Hale-Bopp comet, spectacular sunflares, Mars, Neptune, icy cosmic debris, and more. Detailed text accompanies each image, providing background information and a roadmap to orient the reader.

John Gribbin and Simon Goodwin have collaborated on two previous illustrated volumes featuring Hubble images, both of which have been international bestsellers and have been translated into several languages.

About the Author:

Dr. John Gribbin is Visiting Fellow in Astronomy at the University of Sussex and the author of In the Beginning and Companion to the Cosmos.

From Scientific American:
This is essentially a picture book, but the science is here, too. And what pictures! The sun, its planets and their moons appear in stunning photographs obtained from spacecraft. "Our aim in this book,"Gribbin and Goodwin write, "is to focus unashamedly on the visual delights, offering you our selection of the best vistas of the Solar System that have yet been unveiled. We use some images from the first wave of planetary exploration (but usually dressed up in new, digitally enhanced finery), many from the new wave of planetary probes, and some from our old friend, the Hubble Space Telescope, which provides the best images we can get from Earth orbit of the other members of the Solar System." As for the science, Gribbin and Goodwin present a brief but wonderfully coherent account of the formation of the solar system and what is known about the sun, the planets, the moons, the asteroids and the comets. Three appendixes provide a list of principal planetary missions, 1973 to 1997, a look at the future of planetary probes and four useful astronomical sites on the Internet. The "Empire of the Sun"is special to humankind, the authors say, but it is surely not unique. "In all probability, this means that life--even intelligent life--may be quite common, and that at this very moment there are other civilisations exploring other planetary worlds, and marvelling over the images being sent back to their home planet."
