This collection of essays is the first work to focus entirely on the concept of space and its ramifications in the works of Joyce.

From Library Journal:
James Joyce left Dublin in September 1904, never to live there again, but all of his writings permanently reside in Dublin "and environs." Although much has been written on Joyce's use of Irish locations, this collection of essays takes a fresh look at the concept of space and its connotations in Joyce's major works. Originating in papers given at the 1999 Joyce conference at the Univ. of Miami, Coral Gable, FL, the collection has a wide range of contributors, from senior Joyce scholars like editor Begnal (English and comparative literature, Pennsylvania State Univ.; Dreamscheme: Narrative and Voice in Finnegans Wake), through Martha Fodaski Black, Stanley Sultan, and Jean-Michel Rabat‚, to young faculty beginning their careers and even a Ph.D. student. Topics are equally varied, from the function of place names in Joyce to a study of political memorials in The Dead, to gender and interiority, among many others. This fine bijoux collection reflects today's world of Joyce scholarship for students of Joyce but is probably a bit specialized for beginners. For academic and special libraries.
