About the Author:

Ralph Hickok graduated from Harvard and has worked as a reporter, editor, and reviewer. He is a contributor to Sports Illustrated and has written five previous books, including Who Was Who in American Sports and The New Encyclopedia of Sports. He lives in New Bedford, MA.

First published in 1992, The Encyclopedia of North American Sports History is now in its second edition. Entries fall into eight categories: sports; general history; biography; sporting events; major awards; cities; stadiums, fields, and arenas; and sports organizations, such as leagues, college conferences, and halls of fame. Among the more than 150 new entries are Ford Field; Snowboarding; Williams, Venus E. S. (but no entry for Serena); and XFL. Content is arranged alphabetically; each entry is from 250 words to several pages in length, with the longer entries reserved for histories of the major American sports, such as baseball and football. Some of the entries include illustrations, and Web site addresses are given for associations, teams, and stadiums.

Besides the obvious biographical entries and sports entries, there are topical essays that provide good overviews, among them Arenas, Blacks in sports, and Women in sports. Results of various sports events, such as the Super Bowl, the U.S. Open, and the World Series, have been updated through 2001, as have entries for golf, the Goodwill Games, Seattle's Kingdome, Michael Jordan, and many others.

The importance of this volume is in its coverage of a variety of minor sports, such as women's synchronized swimming, steamboat racing, skin diving, and sled dog racing, for which finding information may be difficult. This is a recommended purchase especially for those who do not have the first edition. Those who have the first edition would have to weigh what other resources the library has at hand--including Web site access RBB
