First published in 2004, The Encyclopedia of Parkinson's Disease has been updated to reflect the latest research and trends in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. The authors, two physicians specializing in Parkinson's disease and a medical writer, have produced a work with more than 650 entries covering the etiology, treatment options, and services available for Parkinson's patients. The alphabetical entries cover a wide range of topics: genes linked to Parkinson's, neurotransmitters, Parkinson's disease assessment tools, surgery to treat Parkinson's, medical insurance, and nutrition and diet. The authors present the information objectively and frankly, noting that some Parkinson's patients have nonmotor symptoms that cannot always be treated. They also discuss alternative therapies such as 0 and Coenzyme Q-10, which may provide some temporary relief although there is no research to support their effectiveness. Two appendixes list organizations and resources and state Medicaid offices.
