This is the 13th volume of Garland's distinguished series of music reference works. Heintze (music librarian, American Univ.) has written a valuable, comprehensive guide to the literature of early American music. The material is organized in two large sections: a general reference works section, which includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, and indexes; and a historical studies section, which includes general histories, topical studies, and biographies. To limit the scope of the book, the author has cited only a few items that pertain to folk, Afro-American, and Native American music. Throughout, one may find occasional lacunae, which can be expected in a volume of this size (which contains almost 2000 entries). Heintze's annotations vary in their usefulness; most times they are detailed and quite helpful, but occasionally they seem too brief and uninformative. Researchers with access to data bases may find some of the on-line references incomplete or outdated. These, though, are minor quibbles; the book is an outstanding and much-needed reference work, and will surely become an invaluable asset to any library's reference section.
