This volume is a truly unique work, covering the entire history of sound recording from pre-Edisonian devices to digital audio technology, with emphasis on the U.S. industry before World War II. Brief entries focus on personalities, societies, technical topics, labels, etc., with longer essays on select topics (e.g., "Gramophone Co."). The extremely browsable book is filled with minutiae and odd topics not readily found elsewhere, although the absence of many technical terms is a weakness. It functions as an excellent complement to Wayne Wadhams's Dictionary of Music Production and Engineering Technology (Schirmer: Macmillan, 1988). The information on labels alone makes this volume essential for the music collections of all academic and large public libraries.
