Regenstein has written an interesting and important monograph. While his enthusiasm for animal rights and conservation sometimes overpowers his scholarship (e.g., he calls St. Thomas More an archbishop), Regenstein provides a competent summary of Christian and Jewish attitudes toward animal rights from antiquity to the present day. He also provides a brief treatment of Buddhist, Hindu, and Islamic attitudes on animal rights and conservation issues. Although some of his sources are dated, his overall treatment is sound and should appeal to a wide audience.
