About the Author:
Peter Atkinson studied Theology at St. John's College, Oxford, and was ordained in 1979. Previously Residentiary Canon and Chancellor of Chichester Cathedral, Peter Atkinson is now the Dean of Worcester.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up—Thematically immense but skillfully distilled in presentation, this reference introduces the men, women, events, and ideas of the Bible. Content is arranged chronologically and described in lay terms, with one spread per topic. Complex and potentially confusing material is explained succinctly: the chronology of Israel and Judah's kings, the Assyrian and Babylonian Captivities, and the transition from the Law of Moses to the law of the New Testament. In addition, Atkinson includes coverage that, while not strictly biblical, serves to illuminate that which is. For example, he discusses other cultures' flood stories, flood-related archaeological evidence, and theories concerning the identity of the serpent that tempts Eve. Unfortunately, no sources are cited. Maps and colorful and dramatic drawings, paintings, and photographs appear throughout. Many of the illustrations depict scenes from the Bible, such as the 19th-century painting Ezekiel in the Valley of the Dry Bones and a reproduction of a page from a 15th-century illuminated manuscript of Job being comforted by his friends. Clear, full-color photos show artifacts and places of interest as they look today. Shaded boxes and sidebars contain information of unusual interest, including the evolution of denominations and the importance of Josephus. With its inviting format and unaffected writing, this is a welcome resource.—Jennifer Prince, Fairview Public Library, NC
