Winner of an AJN Book of the Year Award!

Preparing nurses and other health professionals to provide quality health care amid the increasingly multicultural and global society of the 21st century requires a new, comprehensive approach that emphasizes cultural competence education throughout professional education and professional practice. Written in response to this need, Teaching Cultural Competence in Nursing and Health Care is intended as a primary resource for educators and graduate students in academic settings, health care institutions, and professional associations.

It is the only book that presents a research-supported conceptual model and a valid, reliable corresponding questionnaire to guide educational strategy design, implementation, and evaluation. Teaching Cultural Competence in Nursing and Health Care provides readers with valuable tools and strategies for cultural competence education that can easily be adapted by educators at all levels.

Review:

"According to the author, the need for the book is simple: There is a gap in vital resources in the teaching and learning process that is focused on cultural competence. The book is divided in to eight chapters and includes case studies, tables, and assessment tools....Using the 'Cultural Competence and Confidence' or 'CCC' model, the third chapter introduces a questionnaire that can measure and evaluate the learners' confidence. The following chapters identify and explain educational activities and strategies to identify opportunities for education. Uses of the tools are explained for both healthcare and academic institutions. The book is packed with data....Although the book is primarily directed toward educators and graduate students; I encourage readers who do not hold those titles to read it. The information presented is extremely valuable-especially the tools and activities for employee orientation programs at healthcare institutions. Teaching Cultural Competence and its resources can provide healthcare institutions with the models and tools they need to begin the necessary steps to cultural competency."
-- Nancy Seebert, Manager of Employee Training and Development, Providence Healthcare Systems, Portland, OR in T+D (Training + Development) magazine, August 2006.
