Synopsis
The Anatomy of the Confederate Congress is a study of the influences of member characteristics on legislative voting behavior. Many questions are answered in this first computer-aided analysis of the voting patterns of the members of the Confederate Congress. Using such data as former party affiliation, attitude toward secession, wealth and slave-holding status of each member and his constituents, and the proximity of the members' home districts to actual military operations, the authors have analyzed 1,490 of 1,900 roll-call votes to determine the relationship between a congressman's legislative performance and the factors which might have influenced him. The research helps reveal clear patterns of personal attributes, political behavior, and external forces that affected congressmen's votes and thus the fate of the South.
