Divided into two sections on history and new magazine design, this work draws equally on American and European sources from the turn of the century to 1990. In tight prose Owen narrates the technological and theoretical influences at play within chapters headed "The New York School: 1945-1968," or "Journalism and Art." But the information flows best from large color reproductions of spreads or articles and their copious captions. The concentration is on big names, whether of consumer titles or art directors, but one doesn't have the sense that minor players are left out if their contributions were notable. Detailed enough for the professional to enjoy browsing but not too technical for the lay reader, this very current survey is recommended for media and popular art collections.
