From School Library Journal:
ea. vol: photogs. by Chris Fairclough. unpaged. (Talkabout Series). Watts. 1988. PLB $9.90. PreSchool-Grade 2 Four books that feature clear, bright, full-color and most often full-page photographs, each with one to three lines of large print text. The photos depict mostly Caucasian people. The texts include some basic factual statements about their subjects, but also are more than 50% questions directed toward children and often unanswered (e.g., ``What do you think is hatching from this egg?''), demanding adult input and feedback to add scientific accuracy to the answers and some intellectual benefit from the process. Hence these books are designed and best suited to serve as springboards to individual and/or group discussions in nursery school and kindergarten science classes or at home. There is some awkward grammar. In Growing , a gorgeous photo of an apple tree branch in bloom is captioned ``In spring, many trees have blossom. This is apple blossom.'' In Sound , an illustration of five soda bottles filled with varying amounts of liquid plus a spoon asks, ``Which of these bottles will make highest if you bang them?'' Of the four books, Growing is suitable for the youngest audience. Preschoolers will be attracted to the beautiful photographs of flowers, animals, and children, and will enjoy the text, which uses fewer questions and more facts and statements than the other three. Light, Reflection, and Sound could be used with preschoolers, but also have information to interest first and second graders, and its photographs show slightly older children. Ray Broekel's Sound Experiments (Childrens, 1983) and Nelson Beeler's Experiments with Light (Crowell, 1958; o.p.); Seymour Simon's Mirror Magic (Lothrop, 1980) and Franklyn Branley's High Sounds, Low Sounds (Crowell, 1967) cover many of the same topics but for an older audience and with fewer illustrations.
