Southern Sudan is required reading for anyone concerned with the present condition of the Sudan and the continuing horror of the civil war. It is an authoritative personal story by one of the chief actors, giving an account of his struggle to contain a tragedy which has cost the lives of hundreds of thousands and brought starvation to millions. Joining the judiciary as a magistrate, he was the first Southern Sudanese to be appointed a judge. In 1965 he sacrificed his judicial career to take part in the round Table conference the first attempt to negotiate a settlement to the civil war. In 1968 he was elected to the parliament in Khartoum by his home district of southern Bor. In 1971 Abel Alier was Minister of southern Affairs when he led the delegation from Khartoum to talks in Addis Ababa which brought about the end of the 17-year-old civil war in 1972, to date the only negotiated settlement to a civil war in Africa. It was a precarious peace which lasted 11 years. Until 1981 he served as Vice-President of the republic, and from 1972 to 1977, and 1980 to 1981, he was president of the High Executive Council for the Region of Southern Sudan. #21386.
