According to the National Reading Panel (NRP) report published in 2000, comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading instruction. One method of teaching reading comprehension is through retelling a story, which incorporates several of the research-based strategies recommended in the NRP report. ''Tell Me a Story'' shows primary-grade teachers how to build a solid foundation for retellings by using developmentally appropriate strategies, ultimately leading to independent and successful readers. In this book, you will learn developmental retelling strategies designed to ensure that each child achieves success with reading strategies because the strategies are appropriate for his or her stage of literacy learning. Chapter 1 offers a strong rationale for using developmental retelling instruction. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 provide oral and written retelling strategies that correspond to three developmental levels of reading: emergent, early fluent, and fluent. Each of these chapters demonstrates teacher modelling, student application and practice, and teacher assessment. Because story selection is essential to appropriate modelling of the strategies, each chapter concludes with a list of suggested books. The appendixes - one for each developmental reading level - offer reproducible graphic organizers, rubrics, and other teacher materials you'll need during instruction. Use this comprehensive, step-by-step manual to guide your students through the retelling process and improve their comprehension of text.
