Kindergarten-Grade 8-Sparked by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, these 158 short prayers by children aged 5 to 15 are sweetly moving and sincere. Some are just a few simple words. Others are unusually mature in thought and expression. Some address the needs of the families who lost loved ones and seek to console them. Belief in heaven is prevalent. Some give thanks for the courage of the police and firefighters. Others ask for peace in the world. Some seek blessings for America. Some of the writers want help to become better, stronger, and more loving people. Most are addressed to God, but some are directed to the Virgin Mary and Jesus. Most have the names and ages of their creators. The majority appear in the children's own printing or handwriting, and are illustrated with brightly colored angels, crosses, flags, rainbows, hearts, suns, and stick figures. At the end are 50 adult prayers, one for each state, from the Washington National Cathedral. The only specific source cited for the children's prayers is the Pope John XXIII Catholic School in Scottsdale, AZ, and readers may want to know how the selections were collected.
