During the first half-century after the establishment of legal gambling in Nevada, the economy, skyline, and lifestyle of the Biggest Little City in the World were largely shaped by the city s casinos and the people who created and operated them. The Rise of the Biggest Little City traces this history from the backroom (and often illegal) dives of the industry s beginnings to the elegant casino-resorts of more recent times. Lavishly illustrated with historic photographs, the book offers the stories of over 300 establishments as well as accounts of the men and women who built Reno s gaming industry as owners, managers, and employees.
Reno was a true pioneer of the gaming industry. It was here that big-name entertainers first performed in a casino setting; elegant hotel rooms and fine dining were first offered as amenities of the gaming experience; and ethnic minorities first owned and operated casinos, and first integrated them. The Rise of the Biggest Little City is an authoritative account of the rise of modern Reno and the colorful history that lies behind today s neon and glitz.
