There they find deer tracks, leave food for the animals, go sledding down a hill onto the ice, drink hot chocolate, and remember the places as they were in the warmth of summer. Laura stops along the way to talk with a friend who is ice fishing and to make angels in the snow. The reflective tone of the text helps create the aura of a snowy day in a peaceful place. Gal's beautiful artwork, evidently done in oil pastels, gleams with warm tones under the blues and greens of ice, snow, trees, and water. In Islands, Laura experiences a winter landscape for the first time. She sees water frozen solid and clear as crystal glass. Laura sets out with her mom, snacks and hot chocolate in tow to skate across the lake and explore the winter incarnation of her beloved lake. During their excursion she encounters a boy fishing for fish through a jagged hole in the thick sheet of ice, finds deer tracks, and discovers that her "swimming rock" used as a diving board in the summer is now a slide to sled down. Finally, before returning to the warmth, comfort, and fresh-baked bread in her home, she lies down and makes a trio of angels in the fluffy falling snow.
