A founding president of the California Democratic Council, he helped turn the tide of politics in the state. During WWII, he worked with Elmer Davis in the Office of War Information. He was the first elected controller of California since 1880. But his goal was always the Senate - once there he turned down possible nominations for vice-president and secretary of state. When the political timing was right, he ran for the office and succeeded, rising to distinction as majority whip. Vice President Mondale called Cranston "the most decent and gifted member of the United States Senate".
