"My hunting walkabout began by following a stream from the school grounds to a marsh where I'd cross to another stream, follow it up for a meandering half mile or so before cutting back over a pasture and a field to the first stream. One day while crossing the pasture, I flushed a bird from directly underfoot. Not only did it startle me with its rasping cry, the grass was so closely grazed, the bird seemed to pop out of nowhere. I took another step, and another bird magically appeared and flew away as swiftly and erratically as the first. By the time two more birds were gone, I realized they were snipe and in season as well -- although I never imagined I might have an opportunity to shoot such unusual quarry in New Jersey."
