These searing photos describe, as words cannot, the anti-apartheid movement. The explanatory text that captions the photographs is terse but thorough, leaving the emotional impact of the images intact. Interspersed throughout the volume are short personal narratives found in court record and files from lawyers and human rights organizations that provide a broader context in which to understand the photos. The final "photograph" is a stark, empty page accompanied by a brief anonymous essay that describes this as the photos untaken as a result of the emergency regulations, a grim comment on life in South Africa.
