This guide profiles "100 careers that are projected by the U.S. Department of Labor and a variety of other sources as the fastest growing careers for the next decade." Taking into account the various subspecialties discussed, guidance is provided on far more than 100 careers; the index identifies more than 600 occupations referred to in the text. Of the 100 careers profiled, 29 percent require at least a bachelor's degree, and 8 percent require at least a master's degree. Among the careers covered are accountants and auditors, biologists, computer programmers, food service workers, hotel and motel managers, nurses, physical therapists, secretaries, teachers, and Web masters. A helpful feature is that all career subspecialties mentioned in the text are italicized.

Entries are drawn from the same publisher's Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance (10th ed., 1997) and follow the same format: sections on definition, nature of the work, educational and/or training requirements, opportunities for experience and exploration, methods of entering the career, advancement, employment outlook, earnings, conditions of work, and sources of additional information (containing names, addresses, phone numbers, and in some cases Web or e-mail addresses for relevant associations, unions, and government agencies). The parent work also contains a photograph and a section on the history of the career, which are omitted here.

Although everything here (and more) can be found in Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance, it is convenient to have so much information about the most promising careers available in a low-cost, large-format paperback edition. Recommended for secondary schools, colleges, and guidance and counseling offices.
