Gr 4-7-These series entries introduce scientific principles and techniques, making use of everyday objects and materials that are usually associated more with fun than with science. In each book, the experiments are organized into five or six chapters. Each one begins with an interest-catching statement and introduction. Lists of materials, safety precautions, and black-and-white diagrams that serve as aids to the construction of apparatus and procedures are included. Doing the activities is essential to understanding the principles involved. Often, comprehending the results also depends on carrying out additional investigations. The authors ask leading questions that focus readers' attention on specific outcomes and stimulate thinking about further research. Also, "puzzlers" related to the projects are scattered throughout. The answers to some of them are given at the back of the books; the solutions to others involve conducting more experiments. Students and teachers looking for in-depth explorations and challenging, hands-on projects will want to check out these titles.
