Gr 4-7--These series entries use a predictable format and organization to present biographical information on two figures in American history. Opening chapters, which in both cases fail to arouse much interest, present a highlight or important event from the subject's life. Subsequent chapters present chronological biographies. Occasional oversimplifications or value judgments may lead to confusion for young readers. For example, in Pike, Sanford says "As the frontier advanced, the Shawnee, Delaware, and other Old Northwest Tribes took to the warpath," with no explanation of what that means or why these Native Americans may have been provoked to do so. Neither volume has sufficient maps. There is useful information in both of these titles, and excerpts from Pike's journal do increase reading interest. Susan Sinnott's Zebulon Pike (Children's, 1990) is much more inclusive but designed for older students. There doesn't appear to be another volume on Brigham Young for this grade level.
