From Publishers Weekly:

Finch (Special Effects traces an extensive history of American watercolor painting from its British roots in the 16th and 17th centuries to the present, but focuses mainly on the major masters of the mediumHomer, Sargent, Prendergast at the turn of the century and Marin, Burchfield, Hopper and Demuth a few decades later. His approach is geared to an evaluation and comparison of the formal properties of the works, providing only essential historical facts and neglecting social context. There are no surprises here, but the text is lucid and informative, especially about the technical aspects of watercolor: the role of washes, transparencies, paper texture and brushstroke in the final product. And the generally high quality and generous quantity of the reproductions (416, 260 in color), which are beautifully laid out in relation to the text, plus the thick paper stock and fine design, should delight watercolor enthusiasts and inspire collectors.

From Library Journal:

This overview of the history of watercolor painting in America is a visual feast. The lush illustrations, most in color, invite leisurely browsing through the color and light-filled pages. The text provides a historical survey of the medium in America from colonial artists and the folk traditions to the 20th century avant-garde artists and the realists of the 1970s and `80s. Individual chapters are reserved for America's watercolor masters: Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, John Marin, Charles Burchfield, and Edward Hopper. While the text deals with most of the artists briefly and in general terms, offering no fresh insights, it is fine for beginning students and laypersons seeking a general introduction. More advanced students will find that the paintings speak for themselves. Recommended for most libraries. Lynell A. Morr, John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art Lib., Sarasota, Fla.
