* Escape crowded trailheads by hiking terrific old forest service roads

* Find a variety of challenging hikes and detailed trail descriptions

* Take part in a new movement converting roads to trails
The first book of its kind, Roads to Trails: Northwest Washington was put together by a team of dedicated hikers wanting to utilize decommissioned forest service roads as new hiking trails. These trails take the seasoned hiker off the beaten path and offer an unsurpassed wilderness experience.
The criteria used to select the hikes for this book reflect the individual hiker's particular biases toward what makes a great hike-spectacular views, alpine meadows, verdant forests, mountain lakes and streams, wildlife, and solitude. There's something for everyone in this book.
Find detailed trail descriptions, including mileage, elevations, maps needed, driving directions, and tips for trail maintenance and bushwhacking on the backroads of Washington.

About the Author:

Photographer and writer IRA SPRING'S crisp, breathtaking images of the Northwest wilderness have been inspiring outdoor enthusiasts for several decades. His creative stamp can be found in more than forty books on the outdoors, including Mountaineers Books' titles such as, An Ice Ax, A Camera, And A Jar of Peanut Butter. Ira Spring was also one of the original contributers to the 100 Classic Hikes series. One of the Northwest's most active trail lobbyists, Spring was given the 1992 Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Award for his volunteer efforts toward trail preservation and funding.

Review:
Park the car, grab your rod, a walking staff, a pb&j sandwich, Snicker bar, water bottle and enjoy a quiet day with wild trout on a lonely mountain stream or pond. This book will get you to just such a place. (The Reel News)
