Each section offers background and a historical perspective, several opposing opinions, an analytical ``exercise in critical thinking,'' and a bibliography of periodical articles. Interspersed are the comments of ancient philosphers and contemporary writers. The first section is a powerful confrontation between proponents who argue that individuals should be in control of their own body and opponents who fear that depressive illness, not rational choice, motivates such decisions. The section on teen suicide addresses easy access to guns in the home as a risk factor for troubled, impulsive young people, and examines the high suicide rate among homosexual youth. This title meets the series' standards for balance. The text is followed by a listing of organizations in the field and an annotated bibliography of books. The small cartoons have difficult-to-read captions that detract from the presentation. This is a superb source for reports, discussion, and debates. YAs will find it stimulating and thought-provoking. Stephen Flanders's Suicide (Facts on File, 1991) is less readable.
