The plot of Freedom Voyage weaves together several strands of reality into an imaginary adventure romance.
First, it is inspired by family history. My father, at 98, still clearly recounted events his Grandma Hetty, born in 1821, relayed to him in 1905 about the French brothers, Christophe and Holden, who encountered privateers on their trading cruise to the West Indies in 1751.
Further strands of reality are drawn from historical and literary sources, and from George Washington's journal of his 1751 trip to Barbados.
Utilizing notes from my own eyewitness exploration of the very sites in the West Indies which my forefathers could have frequented, I portray through their eyes the intrigue and romance of Freedom Voyage.
