Sophie, Melanie, Brian, Bobby, and Ricky are nice Jewish kids from the New York/New Jersey suburbs who careen through the 1960s and 1970s sampling lifestyles as if they were pastries on a sweet table. Ricky becomes a caricature of a macho Harvard man. Melanie turns stripper, then radical lesbian. Bobby is pulled towards his Jewish roots, goes to Israel, and studies for the rabbinate. Brian drops out of Reed College and into carpentry. But it is Sophie who sinks deepest into drugs and sexa heroin addict and a prostitute when her brother Brian rescues herand who leads the way back for all of them in this ribald and genuinely moving odyssey through our troubled times.
