Synopsis

Any student of the history of the fur trade on the Northwest Coast of North America is soon drawn to the works of Judge F.W. Howay. Among the publications on this colorful period, his remain unsurpassed in number and quality. Of his many contributions, there is particular merit in "List of Trading Vessels in the Maritime Fur Trade, 1785-1825," published in the Royal Society of Canada's Proceedings and Transactions from 1930 to 1934, volumes XXIV to XXVIII. Combining details drawn patiently, over many years, from manuscripts, shipping news, and accounts of voyages, this list provides a coherent picture of the entire trade. He saw it as a first step toward the preparation of a maritime history of the early Northwest Coast. The list, however, is in installments, which makes it cumbersome to use; there is no index, and the Transactions are not available in most libraries. The Royal Society of Canada has authorized this reprint of the work so that a more portable list, with additional aids, may better serve the needs of researchers. The editor has added an index of ships and masters, by voyages, and a bibliography of all printed and manuscript sources mentioned in the original text, as well as some others which are pertinent. Where known, the repository for each manuscript is stated. The list contains certain small errors and inconsistencies, chiefly in the documentation. Some of these were noted by Judge Howay himself in his Addenda and Corrigenda; others may be found in their correct or complete form in the bibliography compiled for this volume. The list would seem nearly complete, but a check of contemporary newspapers not examined by Judge Howay, or of manuscript material, may turn up a few voyages not in the present list, add facts concerning ones presently listed, or establish the identity of some of the vessels now listed as 'unidentified'.
