Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: poor. Adriaan Aarden (Designer and Illustrator) (illustrator). presumed First Edition, First printing. [10], 171, [3] pages. Illustrations. Bookplate, from the Lord Elgin Hotel Company Limited, related to this book inside the front cover. DJ worn, torn, and missing half of spine from the bottom. Chester Everett Pickering, OBE was born September 11, 1881 in Blackstone Massachusetts and died in Ottawa in 1983 aged just short of 102 years old. He came to Canada in 1908 to found a cleaning materials manufacturing firm famous for a floor sweeping compound called Dustbane. The energetic efforts of Mr. Pickering resulted in Dustbane being made available rapidly from coast to coast in Canada. During his lifetime the company expanded its product line and became a significant supplier of an integrated line of cleaning materials and services. Dustbane recently celebrated its own centenary and still operates in Canada under the direction of Mr. John French, whose family acquired the firm following the death of Mr. Pickering. Mr. Pickering established his firm's headquarters in The City of Ottawa and became a Canadian citizen soon after his arrival in Canada. "Pick" as he was known to his friends, became active in politics serving on City Council and Board of Control from 1939 until 1950. Chester Everett Pickering was responsible for building the Lord Elgin Hotel, and how the hotel was founded and its operating philosophy is recounted in Chapter 12 of these memoirs. From the very beginning the Lord Elgin Hotel began as the centerpiece of a grand plan to create a captivating capital city during the early years of World War II. Seller Inventory # 74672

SYNOPSIS: In 1973, Chester E. Pickering agreed to tell the story of his first ninety-two years. Stong and stubborn, son of a broken marriage, he left home at thirteen and spent his first months of independence in the hobo jungles of New England. As early as that., he knew how to make a profit: when his drifting acquaintances sent the boy to beg for food, housewives always gave him more than he could eat. He took the surplus back to the campfire and thus stayed welcome with the men. He was too ambitious--and soon, also, too scared and too lonely--to remain a bum. He found jobs, then launched his own small business. In his early twenties, he was introduced to the green sweeping compound, Dustbane, that would eventually make him rich. He started selling it on commission and, within a few years, his company manufactured and sold the stuff throughout Canada and the U.S. Today Dustbane Enterprises of Ottawa is a diversified $35-million-a-year public company and C. E. Pickering is its chairman. In Net Worth, this successful industrialist shares with the reader ninety-two years of experience in business and politics and public life. He introduces the men he worked, competed, and drank with; discusses capitalists and capitalism, and explains why both must change or they will lose their present privileges. And he talks of family life. His first marriage failed after a half-dozen years. His second ended after a wondrously happy decade in which he and his Stella traveled and worked side by side until her death. Recently Chester Everett Pickering and his third wife, Mildred, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. C. E. Pickering is a man, not a saint. He acknowledges many of the mistakes he has made. He tells his story to writer Dean Walker in a way that lets the reader decide what should appear in that bottom right-hand corner of the balance sheet. That's the place where, after all assets and successes have been tallied and the debits and failures deducted, what remains is a company's--or a man's--net worth. Dean Walker is a freelance writer and editor. In seventeen years in Toronto he has written for sixty Canadian magazines, and his books include Verdict!, co-authored with John Kettle, and Canada's Agriculture. He edits the advertising business publication Stimulus, and is contributing editor of Executive and Canadian Photography. He is New Zealand born, a Canadian citizen, married with three children. Adriaan Aarden, who designed and illustrated Net Worth, is a portraitist, landscape painter, and freelance graphic artist. In 1954 he came to Toronto from The Netherlands where he studied graphic design and typography at the Amsterdam School of Graphic Arts and fine art at various colleges of art. For eighteen years he was co-proprietor of an art studio and printing plant. He is a Canadian citizen, married, with three children, five grandchildren. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
