About the Author:
Karen L. Swartz, M.D., received her B.A. from Princeton University and her M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she served as chief resident. She is now an attending psychiatrist with clinical expertise in mood disorders and eating disorders. Dr. Swartz is also an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Currently, she is working with colleagues at Johns Hopkins and DRADA (Depression and Related Affective Disorders Association) to develop a school-based program to educate students, faculty, and parents about teenage depression. Her other research has focused on psychiatric disorders in the general population, including the study of whether affective disorders predict migraine headaches, the incidence of social phobias in the Baltimore area, and the heterogeneity and course of affective disorders. Dr. Swartz has written articles for such journals as Archives of General Psychiatry, Current Opinion in Psychiatry, and the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Simeon Margolis, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of medicine and biological chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has been the editor of the Johns Hopkins Health After 50 newsletter for the past 14 years. He is also the author of the following publications: Johns Hopkins Symptoms and Remedies, The Johns Hopkins Medical Handbook, The Johns Hopkins Complete Home Encyclopedia of Drugs, and the new Johns Hopkins Consumer Guide to Medical Tests.
