It is an exploration of the vast records of the federal government preserved nearly a continent away from the place where they originated. In London, the willing staff of the Hudson Bay Co. volunteered to type the necessary extracts from letters and journals a century and a half old. In 1976 the Indian Parent Committee members administering Indian Education Act funds in School District No. 9 in Coos Bay, Or., suggested that they and many others wanted an ethnohistory on the Indians west of the Cascades that could be used by many different types of readers. The committee envisioned a book that would help Indians know more about their own past. They suggested a book that could be read by young people as well as the general public.
