Gr 3-5 Three handsomely-designed books that feature excellent quality, full-color illustrations and photographs of animals close up in their natural environments. Each double-page spread introduces a new subject, such as physical characteristics, feeding habits, reproduction, etc. Carefully-detailed illustrations show bone, muscle, facial structure, and reproductive cycle; maps show where the animals live. One or two brief paragraphs per topic provide general information while captions (in smaller print) near each illustration provide clear detailed information relating to what is shown. However, readers must pull together all of the information. In all three books, animals related to the animal featured are studied for their likenesses and differences (e.g., Giant Pandas are compared to red pandas, bears, and raccoons; in Camels, Wexo also discusses the vicuna, llama, and alpaca). Koalas is a misleading title, since almost half of the book is devoted to other animals which live in Australia, including numerous marsupials, kangaroos, platypuses, and spiny anteaters. The books might be useful for providing brief, basic information for reports and are pleasing browsing items. Susan Nemeth McCarthy, Arlington County Public Library, Va.
